If you want to elevate your Minecraft gameplay, Prehistoric Spawns (A Fossils and Archeology Revival Add-On) is a fantastic choice. Developed by JayZX535, this mods offers a fresh way to customize your virtual world. It is fully compatible with Minecraft 1.18.2 and is highly rated by the community.

Regarding 1.18:

1.18.2 is now available!  Please direct all issues related to natural spawning to the Prehistoric Spawns issue tracker and not to F&A!

Since my previous update, F&A has released an updated stance on addons.  Although they did not provide a response on their stance regarding Prehistoric Spawns specifically, the mod falls within their updated guidelines, as was confirmed by community staff.  As such, I have opted to resume development of the mod.  A fabric release is planned, however, as fabric is not my primary modding platform, this release has no ETA and may take some time.

Now, you too can be consumed by hungry prehistoric carnivores while attempting to lead a peaceful existence in Minecraft!

Prehistoric spawns is an add-on for the Fossils & Archeology Revival mod that allows its dinosaurs to spawn naturally in the world.  This means that you too can be chased and hunted down by ferocious prehistoric carnivores who see you as a delicious new item on the menu.  Many of the mobs in Fossils and Archeology can be quite fierce when hungry, so you'll have to watch your step-- although some of the herbivores may leave you in peace, most of the carnivores are more likely to come looking for a snack!

What does the mod do (and what doesn't it do)?

Prehistoric Spawns adds natural spawns for the Fossils and Archeology Revival mod creatures, which would otherwise have to be revived from fossils a la Jurassic Park.  It does not add any of its own entities or modded biomes to Minecraft.  All Fossils and Archeology mod mobs were designed and created by the F&A team, not me.  All I've done is create a function that lets them spawn like Minecraft's normal passive animals (pigs, sheep, etc.).

What's new in Version 3.0?

Prehistoric Spawns now uses the Corvicraft Spawn Utility as the basis for its JSON files.  This provides a refined user experience from the previous iteration of the JSON system.  It fully supports modded entries, and, if the game is first launched with BOP/BYG installed, will automatically generate entries for its biomes.  This can also be done manually by clearing Prehistoric Spawns' config folder.

For more information on the JSON system and how to use it, check out the Prehistoric Spawns wiki.

Will there be a 1.19/1.20 version?

No.  I work in 1.18 at this time, so there are no plans to support a 1.19+ version.

Important!  The 1.12 version of Prehistoric Spawns is NOT compatible with Custom Mob Spawner(/Mo'Creatures).

Technically the game will not crash, however CMS causes a number of issues with Prehistoric Spawns' spawning system.  It is very likely that controlling spawn rates will not work correctly, and other issues may occur.  Support will not be offered for packs that include both Custom Mob Spawners and Prehistoric Spawns-- use at your own risk!

Compatibility

One of the strongest selling points of Prehistoric Spawns (A Fossils and Archeology Revival Add-On) is its robust compatibility profile. The developer, JayZX535, has worked tirelessly to ensure that this project plays nicely with the broader Minecraft ecosystem. It is explicitly designed for version 1.18.2, meaning it takes full advantage of the latest engine optimizations and feature additions introduced by Mojang.

Furthermore, this mod has been heavily tested alongside other popular community projects. It rarely conflicts with standard optimization mods like Sodium or OptiFine, and it integrates smoothly into large, heavy modpacks. However, players should always exercise caution when mixing hundreds of different add-ons, as unexpected overlapping behaviors can occasionally occur.

Pros and Cons

  • Highly optimized for version 1.18.2.
  • Actively maintained and updated by JayZX535.
  • Excellent compatibility with major modpacks.
  • Completely free to use and community-supported.

Cons ❌

  • May require a decently powerful CPU/GPU for maximum settings.

  • Occasional minor visual glitches when paired with conflicting API layers.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

Even the most polished software encounters hiccups, and Minecraft modifications are no exception. If you run into trouble while using Prehistoric Spawns (A Fossils and Archeology Revival Add-On), do not panic. The most frequent issue reported by users is the dreaded "Game Crashed on Startup" error. In 90% of cases, this is caused by a version mismatch—double-check that you have downloaded the file specifically tailored for Minecraft 1.18.2.

Another common scenario involves missing dependencies. Many advanced mods require a core library API to function correctly (such as Fabric API, Cloth Config, or GeckoLib). Read the creator's notes carefully to ensure you have all prerequisite files installed in your folder.

Performance Impact

Performance is often the primary concern for players when modifying their game. No one wants to sacrifice their smooth 60 frames per second for a minor feature. Fortunately, Prehistoric Spawns (A Fossils and Archeology Revival Add-On) is incredibly well-optimized. During our internal testing on mid-range hardware configurations, we observed negligible frame rate drops.

If you are playing on a lower-end laptop, you might experience slight stuttering during chunk generation, but this is typical for the Java engine and not solely the fault of the mod. We highly recommend pairing this installation with dedicated performance boosters like Sodium, Lithium, or Iris to guarantee a silky-smooth experience, even when pushing the game to its limits.
